Born in San Juan in 1967, Enoc Perez moved to New York in 1986 to study painting at the Pratt Institute before earning his master’s degree at Hunter College. Perez paints vivid series of modern architectural icons, sensuous nudes, still lifes, and tropical resorts, many of which include veiled biographical references to his Puerto Rican heritage.

Born in San Juan in 1967, Enoc Perez moved to New York in 1986 to study painting at the Pratt Institute before earning his master’s degree at Hunter College. Perez paints vivid series of modern architectural icons, sensuous nudes, still lifes, and tropical resorts, many of which include veiled biographical references to his Puerto Rican heritage. He is best known for his paintings of modernist buildings rendered in eye-catching, dazzling hues. Living in midtown Manhattan since 1997, Perez has been captivated by the great skyscrapers and architecture that comprise the city’s iconic skyline. He has made series of building such as the Seagram building, the Eero Saarinen TWA terminal, the United Nations building, and the Lever House. In addition to the New York skyscrapers, Perez frequently paints the modernist buildings that he remembers from his youth in Puerto Rico. For twenty years, Perez worked in a technique related to the printmaking process. Inspired in part by the influence of Andy Warhol and his silkscreens, Perez developed his own innovative method that mimicked the process of color printing. Working from both reproductions and his own photographs, Perez made separate preparatory drawings for each color he desired in his finished painting. He applied oil paint to the back of each of these sheets and pressed them to the canvas to transfer the color. In 2010, Perez decided to begin working with brushes again. Describing his change in process, Perez explains: “Taking up the brush again has been really great, it is allowing me to expand the aesthetic choices that my paintings embody and it has made color into a vehicle to achieve a greater degree of abstraction and intensity. I always love the abstraction that lives within the architecture, and I am making that abstraction most important through the use of color.”
