French abstract sculptor, collagist, engraver, and poet, Arp studied briefly in Paris at the Académie Julian in 1908. His first abstract works were made in 1910 or 1911. In 1912, Arp met Robert Delaunay in Paris, Wassily Kandinsky and the artists of the Blue Rider group in Munich. Co-founder of the Dada movement with Tzara in Zurich in 1916, he continued working on the same lines with Max Ernst in Cologne around 1919-20. During this period, Arp made abstract collages and painted wood reliefs, and published poems. In 1922, he married Sophie Taeuber. Participating in the Surrealist movement, he made reliefs with poetic configurations and experimented with chance arrangements. Since 1930, Arp developed from relief-sculpture to sculpture, which identify with natural forms, without description or imitation.
