I moved to New York in 1967 to attend the Cooper Union, where I studied with Hans Haake, Wolf Kahn, Adja Yunkers, Robert Beauchamp, Leland Bell, Paul Georges, Paul Resika, and others. In the Seventies, I became a founding member of the Bowery Gallery and was a program director for the Figurative Artists Alliance. These were spirited meetings of artists held every Friday night for more than twenty years over the issues of subject matter and figuration that were similar to the abstract expressionists Eighth Street club meetings in the Fifties. In the mid Seventies I attained a Masters Degree in painting from Yale, where I studied with Lester Johnson, Andrew Forge and others. I then returned to New York and continued my investigations into narrative painting, especially the Biblical narrative, as part of a group of artists and political theorists, including Tony Siani, Tom Milstein, and Avi Berkowitz who had focused on the crucial role that monotheism has played in the development of our national identity. I express in my work the link between modern American paintings scale, reduction, and discontinuity on the one hand and the awesome starkness of the Hebrew Bible on the other. In the Eighties I exhibited at Harry Zirlins Gallery 120, which was associated with the Biblical Painters Group. I have recently rejoined the Bowery Gallery after many years with 55 Mercer Gallery, which closed in June, 08. At numerous venues in and around New York City, I continue to exhibit Biblical subjects, history paintings, and group figures, as well as drawings from the model, and prints.
