Luke Diiorio makes his signature works by repeatedly folding linens and canvas. In the final compositions, only about one third of the material that he uses is still visible. “I think the folds relate to our relationship with the physical world,” he says. “Each visible segment of material overlaps a concealed equal portion, creating a rhythm of not only line and space, but also of visible and invisible.” The functional materials that Diiorio uses are rendered obsolete by his process; the final products are relics of his gestural practice. His canvases—some of which remain raw, and others of which are colored with neutral pigments—evoke the gridded, minimalist paintings of [Agnes Martin](/artist/agnes-martin) and [Robert Ryman](/artist/robert-ryman).
