Gao Lei : Enzyme of Trial
ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL is proud to present Chinese artist Gao Lei’s (b. 1980) solo exhibition <Enzyme of Trial> from November 23, 2017 to January 14, 2018. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition in Seoul since his <Projection> solo exhibition shown at ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL Cheongdam space in 2012. Gao Lei's recent works focus on the regulation of dependency existing between "objects" and "energies". He combines and rebuilds daily objects to capture the confrontational energy generated from an individual motivation of the social system, while keeping it calm and orderly. The violence of power is transformed by the artist into an enduring tolerance and restraint. In this solo exhibition, an installation work composed of ceramic insulators for high-tension cable connected with found wooden braces, shares homonymous title as the exhibition Enzyme of Trial. It implicates the mode of trial in the judicial system where suspects are forced to plead guilty by the "technical" definition of violence, induction and even brainwashing. Under such circumstance, artist then constructs a ‘trial’ where his artworks become ‘evidences’ linking each other driven by the clues artist sets forward in the exhibition, guiding to a valid or invalided ‘confession’. These clues act as the ‘enzyme’ activating the energies gathered during the formation of the artworks, changing the original context of creation, where finally a new ‘specialistic’ truth is produced as an outcome of catalytic reaction.
