Each Modern at West Bund Art & Design 2019

Each Modern is proud to announce its participation in the 2019 West Bund Art & Design fair in Shanghai. This year’s artists include Chinese contemporary painter Yin ZhaoYang, New York-based Taiwanese painter Chen Hilo, young Taiwanese artists Tseng ChienYing and Wu MeiChi, and from Japan, Mono-ha member Suga Kishio and master of photography, Suda Issei. Join us as we explore, through painting and photography, the various forms of this year’s theme, “Water and People.” Chinese artist Yin ZhaoYang (born 1970 in Nanyang) is well-known for his thick oil paintings, recreating Chinese “shanshui” landscapes with contemporary abstract techniques. His works will be presented in a mini-solo exhibition to draw attention to his bold brush strokes and use of color. As seen in two new works painted this year, though direct, Yin’s use of color and technique are not lacking in poetic magnificence. Xu Jiong (Born 1983, Hangzhou, China) with his background in traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, has developed an abstract and graffiti-like font style. In 2019, his series Self-Portrait reexamined his own identity through a composite of new and old works combined in acrylic and paint. Having made his home in the United States for many decades, Taiwanese painter Chen Hilo (born 1942 in Yilan) utilizes a masterful technique in his figurative portraits, with attitudes and expressions that transcend their time and place. A key figure of photorealism and hyperrealism, his works are well known and can be found in numerous Western contemporary art institutions. Young Taiwanese artist Tseng ChienYing (born 1987 in Nantou) follows an Eastern traditional style of painting in creating living scenes with landscapes and figures on paper with delicate materials such as ink, mineral pigments and silver foil. On backgrounds of light and fluid landscapes, Tseng’s characters appear, with quixotic expressions beside rivers, or at the bottom of the sea, all of which are rebellious reflections of the artist's identity. Another young Taiwanese artist Wu MeiChi (born 1989 in Tainan), creates surrealistic photographic of still life works through close-up shots. Her latest photography series, YXX, presents quotidian objects through powerful colors to create stunning views, or even the illusion of a blue ocean. Japanese Mono-ha emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s. A principle member of this movement, Suga Kishio (born 1944 in Morioka), has continuously examined the nature of objects, placement, and space through his practice, utilizing various “mono” (things) his work reveals unseen interactions between objects, space, and viewer. Japanese master of photography, Suda Issei (1940-2019, born in Tokyo), devoted his life to his photography, constantly documenting the ingenious moments of his day-to-day. Each Modern will showcase a series of his original black and white silver gelatin photos from the 1970s at the West Bund Art & Design fair – sharing the photographer's numerous documented gestures of his subjects on sandy beaches, by the sea, and in the water.
